Migrating WordPress from Development Domain to Production Domain

January 3rd, 2012 No comments

Today I migrated a client’s website from a development domain to a production domain. The former was hidden from search engines, yet available to the public eye.. if someone knew the exact domain name. The latter is my client’s well-known url and very public.

Since I built the site in WordPress, when I migrated the files and database between domains, the old domain was scattered throughout the database in various fields in various tables.

I discovered a handy SQL command to replace the exact string of text I needed to replace, and I simply ran it through the SQL command line interface within cPanel’s phpmyadmin:

UPDATE name_of_table SET name_of_field = replace(name_of_field,"olddomainname.com","newdomainname.com");

I had to run the above command about 5 times with different tables/fields, but it accomplished the job quite nicely!
